Buri Buffalo Race is held in Chon Buri during October every year. This event
is a long-established celebration of this most useful animal of Thai farmers.
The water buffalo is one of the mainstays in the life of a Thai farmer, but
in this annual event it is put to more amusing uses than ploughing the local
fields, such as buffalo races and contests pitting buffalo and man. The beasts
of burden are dressed outrageously or with admirable creativity by owners depending
on their imagination. Assembled in the courtyard in front of the town hall,
the buffaloes partake in racing, or take part in physical fitness and fashion
contests.
